In the Netherlands a group of activists from the "Committee of citizens of the European Union" calls for a referendum on the ratification of the Association agreement of Ukraine with the European Union. The holding of a plebiscite in accordance with not long ago accepted in the Netherlands by law. The document allows residents to demand the organization of a referendum on the already approved laws or agreements.
To initiate the procedure activists need to mount 10 thousand signatures until August 6. If this step is successfully overcome, the electoral Commission must make a preliminary application for a referendum. Then you need to collect 300 thousand signatures within 6 weeks, informs "Bi-bi-si".
Remember, the Association agreement with the EU Ukraine was signed in 2014. The Verkhovna Rada and the European Parliament at the same time ratified the document on 16 September 2014. It will enter into force once ratification procedures will complete all 28 EU members.
A new Dutch law on referenda entered into force on 1 July and can be used only to the laws approved by then. Dutch foreign Minister reminded that the agreement on Association of Ukraine with the EU was published in the government Gazette on 10 July, after the lower and upper house confirmed it. But even if the referendum is held, and the majority of people will vote against the ratification of the document, it will not be an indispensable guide to action.
