The Russian government will give emergency humanitarian assistance to Zimbabwe, which is suffering from economic meltdown and a massive cholera epidemic, the Russian Foreign Ministry said on Friday.
"Taking into account the grave social and economic situation, and a food crisis due to a continuous drought in Zimbabwe, the Russian government has decided to provide urgent humanitarian aid to the country`s population," the ministry said.
According to the Zimbabwean central statistics body, inflation in the country is currently at a record 231,000,000 percent on an annualized basis, with the unemployment rate hitting 94% several million refugees have fled Zimbabwe to seek refuge in neighboring countries.
Zimbabwe is suffering from a severe shortage of food and fuel. The extended economic crisis has devastated the healthcare system, leaving the country virtually incapable of dealing with the cholera epidemic sweeping through the country that has so far left several thousand dead.
