Analyst: return to Kiev spent fuel NPP meets practice
The intention of Ukraine to be brought back into their territory of radioactive waste generated During reprocessing in Russia of irradiated nuclear fuel (SNF) of Rivne NPP fully meets the generally accepted international practice, said Tuesday Last news specialist in nuclear power engineering, chief editor of the portal AtomInfo. Ru Alexander Uvarov.
first it was claimed that the Ministry of energy and coal industry of Ukraine formed a working group to establish recommendations to the state enterprise "NNEGC" Energoatom " for signing with the Russian side of the contract on the return to Ukraine of products of processing in the Russian Federation the spent fuel boilers VVER-440 of the first and 2nd units of the Rivne NPP.
"In the processing of irradiated nuclear fuel (SNF) radioactive waste are formed, which are not fissile materials - there is, for example, there are structural materials and fission fragments ", - said Uvarov.
The resulting waste is returned to a country which supplied the spent nuclear fuel from their nuclear power plants for reprocessing, said the head of the Department.
"It is common international practice. For example, European Union countries, which supply the reprocessing in France of the spent fuel from their nuclear power plants, then take the resulting radioactive waste itself. This is done in Accordance with legal obligations, which must be supported by the relevant contract ", - said the expert.
