The Pentagon is discussing the placement of the US army in Syria
The U.S. Department of defense plans to deploy ground troops in Syria to speed up the fight against ISIS. This step will significantly change military's operation in Syria in case of approval and can supply troops for several weeks.
Still only a small team mostly from the special operations forces operating in Syria, providing assistance in the fight against ISIS opposition groups. American officials described the concept of deploying land forces as the starting point of the discussion, indicating that it is an official offer.
Whether deployed ground forces is not yet clear, but the purpose of their presence is to help to reassure Turkey that the Kurdish forces did not create a threat to the interests of Ankara. Quite possibly some troops will be deployed first to Kuwait and then moving to Syria. The Obama administration did not accept the idea of ground combat troops because of the inherent risks. If the idea is approved, it will mean a fundamental change in the willingness of the administration to trump to take that risk. On the one hand, it would be a sign of increased willingness on the part of the Minister of defence James Mattis and Chairman of the joint chiefs of staff General Joseph Dunford to take more risk for American troops in the hope of freeing the land from ISIL.
Sending troops to Syria is just one of several ideas that can be presented to the President, the official said.
