16 people died as a result of the crash of the marine corps in Lefler County, Mississippi, according to the Director of County emergency Fred Randle.
The marine corps announced about the incident on his Twitter account, but did not provide details. Local media at the crash site expect updates from officials on Monday night, but Randle said they have no additional information, citing an ongoing investigation.
The KC-130 is one of the most widely used aircraft in the army. Aircraft can be modified for a variety of purposes, including transportation of goods, transportation of troops, or conducting in-flight refueling.
The Minister of the interior and Navy SEAL Ryan Zinke on Twitter expressed his condolences, saying: "Please join me to pray with the families of the Marines we lost tonight in the crash of a C 130".
Tennessee Congressman Steve Cohen also expressed condolences: "So sorry to hear that 16 Marines were killed. My heart is close to their families, friends and soldiers." Republican Senator Thad Cochran said he was "deeply saddened by the loss of lives in today's tragedy."
Lefler County is a mostly rural area in the Western part of the state.
