Human rights activist Liu Xiaobo, winner of the Nobel peace prize on Chinese dissident, has died, according to local authorities in its statement on Thursday. He was 61 years old.
Liu spent over 10 years behind bars in China for the promotion of democracy, including participation in the protests in Tiananmen square in 1989.
He was granted medical parole in June after he was diagnosed with liver cancer in prison. The government of Beijing has forbidden him to seek help abroad, despite the wishes of Liu and international pressure.
