President Donald trump will soon introduce new sanctions against Russia. Congress is expected to approve a bill to impose new sanctions against Russia in connection with its intervention in the elections in 2016 in the United States and its human rights abuses, annexation of the Crimea and military operations in the East of Ukraine.
The bill also gives Congress the ability to block any weakening of new sanctions against Russia, North Korea and Iran, as well as older against Russia. The bill will appear on the President's Desk before the end of the month to sign the bill or rejected it. White house sends mixed message that would trump the bill.
The United States and the European Union in 2014 introduced a co-ordinated sanctions over the Russian occupation and then the annexation of the Crimean Peninsula from Ukraine.
Some Russian citizens have suffered from travel bans and freezing of assets, and the company suffered from restrictions on its activities in the USA and the EU. The sanctions were mainly aimed at worsening Russian economy. They are focused on Russian state banks and large corporations, including state oil companies such as Rosneft and weapons manufacturer.
Other countries have imposed their sanctions in the coming days and months, including Japan and Australia, as well as several countries outside the EU, including Norway and Switzerland.
The reduction of trade with Russia also affected some parts of the EU, and in August 2014, Russia responded by introducing a ban on food imports from countries that imposed sanctions. This greatly affected the agro-food sector of the EU.
Putin has ridiculed the sanctions and urged countries, especially the US, to abandon them.
