MOSCOW, November 10 - A total of 1,183 interior troops have been killed since the anti-terrorist operation began in Chechnya, the first deputy commander-in-chief of the Russian Interior Ministry?s Interior Troops reported at a meeting with military widows.
According to Colonel-General Yevgeny Baryaev, the title Hero of the Russian Federation has been awarded to 70 interior troops. Forty-eight of them were awarded posthumously. Another 9,000 servicemen have received orders and medals of the Russian Federation during that period, the general said.
Baryaev also said that the families of the killed military receive assistance from the Interior Troops command. Sponsors also participate in charity actions.
The deputy commander-in-chief of the Interior Troops, Lieutenant-General Sergei Topchii, for his part, said "there are more than 500 military widows at the present moment, who have lost their husbands mostly in troubled spots".
