The French were left with no morning paper to accompany their croissant and coffee on Thursday morning after a nationwide strike by print workers protesting lay-offs.
Many editions had to publish their Thursday issues online free of charge.
A switch to digital technology has resulted in large numbers of redundancies in newspaper printing, AFP reports.
According to a report on the World Association of Newspapers and News Publishers website, Hersant publishing house has fired 670 people, while Presstails press distribution company dismissed around 1000 employees.
The news industry workers have called for the French Government to intervene and demanded a moratorium on lay-offs.
The strike was condemned by the National Union of Daily Press. Printed media have fallen victims of this strike, while their competitors on television and the internet continued. According to the Union this strike did no good to the current situation and only destabilized the job market.
This is not the first time French printers have gone on strike. The Le Monde daily wasn`t published in October last year.
