Lithuania speaks against isolation of Poland in the EU
After a meeting of the Baltic countries and Visegrad countries held on June 17 in Luxemburg, Lithuanian Foreign Minister Petras Vaitiekunas expressed his hope that the European Union and Poland would finally find a compromise on the European Constitution.
As REGNUM was told today at the Lithuanian Foreign Ministry, Vaitiekunas said a decision is need that would satisfy all the 27 EU member-countries.
"We are interested that a principal agreement on the European Constitution is reached by the Council of Europe," the Lithuanian foreign minister said noting that "Lithuania understands Poland?s concern." Speaking on possible consequences in case Poland blocks the process of adopting the EU Constitution, the minister announced that "Poland must not become isolated."
Earlier, Polish leadership spoke against some clauses of the European Constitution and threatened to block adoption of the EU basic law, if Poland?s interests are not taken into account. The Polish leadership opposes the distribution of influence and votes between the EU countries. Today?s distribution of the votes in the EU and the decision-making mechanism between the EU countries does not suit Poland. The current distribution of the votes in the EU and the decision-making mechanism suits well 26 countries, and Poland is the only country in the EU.
Lithuania was the first country in the European Union that adopted the European Constitution.
