In Russia started the construction of a nuclear reactor on fast neutrons. The facility is planned to explore new types of nuclear fuel, structural materials, coolants.
Multi-purpose fast research reactor (MBIR) is based on Dimitrovgrad scientific research Institute of atomic reactors (RIAR), a member of the state Corporation "Rosatom", in the framework of the Federal target program "Nuclear power technologies of a modern development for the period 2010-2015 and until 2020", informs "Interfax".
The reactor should start their own work in 2020. It will be the strongest of the similar operating worldwide installations operating in the fast neutron 4th generation. Its heat capacity with sodium coolant is 150 megawatts. After the completion of construction work by 2018 on the basis of the MBIR is planned to create an international research center.
On MBIR will conduct research in the field of nuclear security, medicine, and the development of promising nuclear installations. With the help of the reactor is planned to establish production of various isotopes, structural materials and coolants.
Note that today's nuclear reactors on fast neutrons are used only in Russia - a reactor at the Beloyarsk NPP. India, China and South Korea are building such plants with Russian professionals. Japan among other things outlines the research nuclear reactor at the rapid neutrons.
