At least 19 people died in the hospital during a fire in Bhubaneswar, the capital of the Indian state of Odisha, Secretary of the state health Arti Ahuja, CNN reported. Another 106 were injured, she said.
The fire started around 7:30 p.m. local time in a private hospital, Sum. More than 600 patients were admitted to the hospital when a fire broke out in the block of the first floor.
The fire spread to the ICU.
Prime Minister Narendra modi responded to the incident on Twitter, calling it "mind-numbing" tragedy.
According to preliminary data, the majority of people may have died due to smoke inhalation, said Ahuja.
An investigation is underway to determine the cause of the fire, she said.
