Puerto Rico was covered by the darkness. 1.5 million people left on the island without electricity due to a fire at the plant, reported in accordance with the statement from the government electric company AEE.
The outage affected most of the country, causing a traffic jam, and many businesses had to close down.
But telecommunication services are working properly and the international airport Luis muñoz Marin continues to work, the Governor of Puerto Rico Alejandro Garcia Padilla said at a press conference.
Padilla said that the outage will last for several hours, although some areas can get the power back on within two to four hours.
Company AEE has stated that the outage occurred after a fire at their plant, but it is under control. About injuries was not reported.
At the moment, the government does not believe that the outage was the result of any kind of sabotage to electricity company, but it will need to explore, said Padilla.
