The couple announced they had separated after almost seven years of marriage yesterday. They gave no reason for the split, simply saying they had parted ways earlier in the year and it was "amicable and by mutual agreement".
It has now been claimed actress Kate and director Sam decided they could no longer be together in January, after trying to save their marriage for many months. They apparently found working together on 2008 movie Revolutionary Road hard, which put a strain on their relationship.
"Working and living together was incredibly intense and it basically overwhelmed their relationship," a source told British newspaper The Daily Mirror. "The pair have a very different work ethos. Whereas Sam wanted to switch off after a long day, Kate liked to analyse every nuance of her performance; it was just too much. Last year they both made a commitment to spend the year together and do less work - but it actually ended up with them both going a bit stir crazy. They are both really driven and were arguing more than ever before. But in the early new year they gradually realised their marriage was on its last legs. They are both devastated but want to stay on good terms."
Kate and Sam raise two children together, their six-year-old son Joe and Kate?s daughter Mia Honey, nine, who she had with her ex-husband Jim Threapleton.
It has also been claimed the pair had several "huge rows" before deciding to formerly separate, and have been living away from each other for some time.
Their marriage was widely regarded as one of the happiest in the business, although many were surprised when Kate attended the recent spate of awards ceremonies, including the Oscars and BAFTA Film Awards, alone.
Kate and Sam began dating shortly after her divorce from Jim, and they married in May 2003 on the Caribbean island of Anguilla. Their son was born in New York where the pair spent most of their married life.
