President-elect Donald trump said Thursday that he has appointed adviser David Friedman, to serve as U.S. Ambassador to Israel, signaling a conservative attitude towards the Jewish state policy of Jerusalem and of the two States.
The statement Friedman made reference to moving the U.S. Embassy in tel Aviv, the business capital of Israel. His comments coincided with the election campaign trump, who promised to recognize Jerusalem as undivided capital of Israel. Friedman also said that in the past he did not believe in Israeli settlements and opposed the ban on construction in the West Bank and East Jerusalem. Republicans have long sought to establish an American Embassy in Jerusalem and recognize the city as the capital of Israel. Last the US administration has not made this step, because the Palestinians considered Jerusalem its capital.
U.S. administrations on both sides have not done this step, since Palestinians also claim Jerusalem as their capital. For 60 years the United States did not recognize no sovereign's claim to Jerusalem. The Supreme court ruled last year that people may not have the inscription "Israel" on his passport as his place of birth, there should be written "Jerusalem". The law on Jerusalem, adopted in 1995, requires the United States to the American Embassy was moved to Jerusalem. Presidents bill Clinton, George Bush and Barack Obama all refused to move the Embassy after the election, citing national security. Progressive group of Israel, said that "categorically" against Friedman, referring to his position on two States. The Republican Jewish coalition, however, welcomed the selection and pledged to work with Friedman to move the American Embassy to Jerusalem.
"The choice of David Friedman as the Ambassador of the United States sends to Israel a powerful signal to the Jewish community that the administration of President-elect trump is ready to strengthen the bond between our two countries and contribute to peace in the region, "says the organization. A self-position of the trump for Israel was not clear, throughout the campaign. It has long been said that negotiating a peace agreement between Israel and the Palestinians would be the pinnacle of deals that trump would be proud.
