American soldier died from wounds received in a RAID in Yemen against al-Qaeda, the first U.S. military attack under the leadership of President Donald trump, U.S. Central command said Sunday. 6 other soldiers were injured, it's not life-threatening.
"In the successful RAID against al-Qaida headquarters in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP), the brave American forces have played an important role in the deaths of about 14 members of the group and capturing important object that will help US in preventing terrorism against its own citizens and people around the world, "said trump in a statement.
"Americans are saddened this morning by news that a soldier's life faded in our struggle against the evil of radical Islamic terrorism," he added. "My deepest condolences and prayers sent to the family of this fallen soldier. I also pray for a quick and full recovery for the brave servicemen who got injuries."
US military said that the RAID was not aimed against specific individuals, but aims to "operation site" is a military term to describe intelligence gathering actions. Sources in Yemen reported that three senior al-Qaeda leaders were among those killed. Later the same was confirmed by a us official.
"We are deeply saddened by the loss of one of our elite soldiers," said the US commander General Joseph Votel. "The victim is very deep in our fight against terrorists who threaten people worldwide." U.S. military officials believe that AQAP is exploiting the ongoing civil war in Yemen to strengthen its presence there.
