A small chartered plane with 5 people on Board crashed into a shopping center shortly after takeoff from the airport "Essendon" on Tuesday morning in Melbourne, said Australian police.
All 5 people on Board died in the accident, reported according to police. Four passengers were from the United States, while the pilot was Australian.
"It was a catastrophic plane crash that claimed many lives. But, of course, if we look at the circumstances, we are very lucky today that no people were around," said assistant Commissioner of police. The interior of the Mall was empty when the plane went down about 9 o'clock in the morning.
The complex will remain closed throughout the day, police said. At the scene are still working firefighters and investigators, they're trying to find the cause of the accident. The investigation described the accident as "a tragic accident" and said that authorities soon will have more updated information about potential victims.
All flights from the airport "Essendon", a small airport, which depart from Melbourne airport were temporarily suspended. In a post on Twitter, Prime Minister of Australia Malcolm Turnbull said that he was "deeply saddened" accident. "Our hearts and prayers are with the victims and their families," he said.
