An Indian court on Tuesday granted the right to abortion of a minor girl rape case.
The girl, believed to be 10 years old, and she was due in 4 months, police said. Authorities said that her stepfather was arrested as a result of the ongoing violence. Indian law prohibits to disclose the name of rape victims.
The court decision was made a day after the medical Board examined a girl in the Institute of postgraduate education of medical Sciences in Rohtak district in the Northern state of India in Haryana. "The court asked the doctor to terminate this pregnancy," says Dr S. K. Bhattarai, head of the forensic medicine Institute. "We looked at the girl, to determine the best method for abortion."
The law of India on abortion and birth does not allow abortion after 20 weeks only if "does not require termination of such a pregnancy to save the woman's life". After suspicions that her child may be pregnant, the mother of the poor of Bihar, took the girl to the doctor. Allegedly, the girl told her mother that the accused, who is also her uncle on the paternal side, subjected her to sexual abuse, local media reported. The police said that no official data about the date of birth of the girls there. "Victim 10 years, but it may be a year or two older," - said the head of police, Rohtak.
"My stepfather has been arrested and is in jail. The victim received counseling and medical help, and her statement recorded by a magistrate," said the head of police.
