Spanish clean-up crews remove 47 tonnes of fuel after Ibiza spill Spanish clean-up crews have removed 47 tonnes of fuel that leaked from a freighter which ran aground last week off the holiday island of Ibiza in the Mediterranean, the environment ministry said Wednesday.

The 145-metre (476-foot) "Don Pedro" was carrying 100 tonnes of fuel oil and 50 tonnes of diesel when it struck a rocky offshore outcrop and sank on July 11 off the port of Ibiza, just as the peak holiday season was getting underway.

Leaks from the ship, which had been sailing from Ibiza to the eastern port city of Valencia when it sank, affected five of Ibiza`s 220 kilometres (135 miles) of coastline and three of the island`s 56 beaches.

Two beaches which were closed to the public due to pollution from the leak - Figueretes and Talamanca - remained closed while the third affected beach - Playa d`en Bossa - re-opened on Tuesday, the ministry said in a statement.

Floating barriers set up after the ship sank have prevented fuel from reaching the beaches of the nature reserve at Ses Salines, a wildlife habitat and a resting point for migratory birds between Africa and Europe, it added.

Ibiza, known for its lively nightlife and clear waters, is one of Europe`s top holiday destinations.
