Arctic Nations signed the Treaty for the prohibition of fishing in the Arctic
The Plenipotentiaries of Russia, USA, Norway, Canada and Denmark on Thursday signed an agreement on the prohibition of fishing in international waters of the Arctic, reports.

the Treaty applies to the area of the high seas, outside the exclusive economic zones of the Arctic countries and area comparable to the Mediterranean sea.

an agreement between countries had to be signed in June last year, but because of the worsening international situation in the Wake of the Ukrainian conflict, the signing was postponed.

first it was claimed that fish accumulation in the Arctic are poorly known, the rapid melting of the ice leads to a restructuring of the ecosystem. In these circumstances, even accidental overfishing of fish stocks may cause irreparable damage to the entire ecosystem.
