Kiev urged to hold a referendum on joining NATO
Ex-President of Ukraine Leonid Kravchuk and former Prime Minister Yevhen Marchuk, former foreign Minister Volodymyr Ohryzko, former national people's Deputy Ivan Zayets and other Members of the initiative group appealed to the Ukrainian authorities with an open letter in which has made the proposal to hold a Referendum on the issue of accession to NATO.
Members of the initiative group believes that Ukraine needs to strengthen its defence capability, pursuing a more assertive policy towards joining NATO, and to hold a Referendum nationwide Referendum on the possibility of NATO membership.
"We are realistic and understand that the path of Ukraine into NATO is not easy. But the will of the people should be fixed in the referendum - "Ukraine - NATO" that will witness the immutability of our Euro-Atlantic civilization choice. A referendum cannot be postponed!", - RIA "news" the text of the letter that the correspondents received from the initiative group on the last working day of the week at a press conference. The letter is open and addressed to the President of Ukraine, the Prime Minister and the head of the Verkhovna Rada. The authors of the message have expressed concern about the situation in the East of the country and agitate the public authorities to take more decisive steps towards Euro-Atlantic integration. Last year, NATO decided to form four trust Fund, through which Ukraine will be allocated fifteen million euros to support reforms in the security sector. The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine on December 23 last year made changes to 2 of the law of the country, renouncing non-aligned status of the country.
