Ukraine on Sunday celebrates the Day of national flag. The eleventh anniversary from the moment the holiday became public, the country will celebrate without large-scale festive events: according to the tradition in Kiev's Sophia square solemnly raise the national flag, with the assistance of the President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko, as well as the most important people of the country.

earlier this holiday in Ukraine was celebrated at the municipal level, but in 2004 the head of Leonid Kuchma gave him the status of a state. The corresponding decree of the head tied to the event August 23, 1991, when a group of people's deputies made a blue and yellow flag in the Verkhovna Rada, where he was consecrated a priest of the UAOC Peter Boyko.

The state flag of Ukraine with coat of arms and anthem is the official state symbol of the country. It represents a rectangular panel, which consists of 2 equal horizontal stripes: the top is blue and bottom yellow. The ratio of the width of the flag to its length is 2: 3.

Yellow and blue symbols appeared in the Kyivan state even before the baptism of Rus. After the Mongol-Tatar invasion it for some time disappeared, but was revived on the arms of most Ukrainian cities: almost all of them framed in yellow and blue colors.

The first documented use of yellow and blue was the emblem of Lviv of the earth. Banner "Leopolda" (Lviv), which depicted a "yellow lion, rising on a rock, on a field of azure" was used by the troops in 1410 during the battle of Grunwald against the Teutonic knights.

Officially the blue-yellow flag became the state flag of Ukraine After the adoption of the country's sovereignty on 28 January 1992. This provision was approved by the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine.
