Police Chief to Serve Jail Time for SJP Surrogate Break-In The Ohio police chief found guilty last month of breaking into the home of Sarah Jessica Parker and Matthew Broderick`s surrogate has been sentenced to two years and eight months in prison.

Suspended Martins Ferry Police Chief Barry Carpenter was convicted on Nov. 23 with receiving stolen property, theft in office and tampering with evidence.

His attorney says he plans to appeal the sentence, which was first reported by Ohio affiliate WTRF.

Carpenter -- along with Bridgeport Police Chief Chad Dojack, who is scheduled to stand trial on similar charges in January -- broke into the surrogate`s home in May seeking information they could sell to a tabloid. The tabloid turned them into authorities after discovering how the material was obtained. The surrogate -- who later gave birth to the star couple`s twins Marion and Tabitha -- was not at home during the incident.

At the time, Carpenter -- who pled not guilty -- told local WTOV station: "I`m 100 percent innocent in this and my department is as well."

The police chief resigned from his post two weeks ago.
