Russian fighter jet crashed into the Mediterranean sea while trying to land on the Russian carrier, according to the state news Agency TASS.

The pilot of the MiG-29 successfully ejected and landed several miles from the carrier, reports TASS with reference to the Ministry of defense of Russia.

The Ministry of defence said that the accident occurred due to technical problems. It is unclear when the tragedy occurred. A flotilla of Russian naval vessels, including the Soviet aircraft carrier, arrived from the Syrian coast on Saturday. Russia has supported the Syrian government during the conflict in that country.

The flotilla began its journey last month, having sailed from the North sea and skirting the coast of the UK. NATO and UK officials are closely watching the courts.

In a statement issued at the time stated that the Russian Navy should "provide a naval presence in important regions of the World ocean. Special attention will be paid to ensuring the safety of Maritime navigation and other Russian Maritime economic activities, as well as responding to new types of modern threats such as piracy and international terrorism".
