Ikea plans to release a new range of carpets and textiles made by the Syrian refugees in 2019. This initiative is expected to create new jobs for about 200 Syrian refugees living in Jordan, most of them women.

"The situation in Syria is one of the major tragedies of our time, and Jordan took on more responsibility in the accommodation of Syrian refugees ... We decided to examine how Ikea can contribute," said Jesper Brodin, managing Director at Ikea. Jordan took a little over 655 thousand Syrian refugees, according to the United Nations.

Recent UN data show that about 37 thousand work permits were issued in Jordan, Syrian refugees, although many Syrians are working without permits. There is a very low level of employment among women, who are traditionally tasked with caring for children. Ikea said it will work with local organizations to provide a more flexible schedule for women who are caring for family members.

Carpets and textiles will be sold locally and in other markets in the Middle East that have a free trade agreement with Jordan. The Swedish furniture giant said the products will be released in a limited edition.
