The mayor of Paris called for protesters to remain calm The mayor of the city in the suburbs of Paris called for calm on Sunday after the demonstration over the alleged rape of a young man by the police.

More than 2 thousand people marched Saturday in the city, "Bobigny", about six miles (9.2 km) North-East of the French capital. They chanted and carried placards demanding justice for the 22-year-old man who says he was raped by the police.

The demonstration escalated into violence when several hundred demonstrators broke away from the March and began the riots, police said. They smashed Windows, set cars and garbage cans and attacked law enforcement officers, who in response was tear gas into the crowd.

No one was injured, but 37 people were arrested, police said. Several cars were set on fire, including van European broadcasting RTL. At least two local businesses were destroyed, including the supermarket, which was also looted. Was also damaged the bus station.

The demonstrations began after four police officers allegedly attacked the young man, February 2 in a residential complex in the Northern Paris suburb of Aulnay-sous-Bois. Black guy identified as Theo. The injuries demanded surgical intervention. The incident intensified racial tension between police and immigrant communities in poor areas around Paris. All 4 officers involved in the incident, was charged with aggravated assault.
