A man opened fire in Central Paris Evening of April 20, unknown persons opened fire at the police on the Champs Elysees. The incident killed one employee and injured two more.

The man who killed a police officer on the Champs Elysees on Thursday evening, was known to French security services as a supporter of radical Islamist groups, said a source close to the investigation. The suspect, who was shot dead by the French police was on the radar of domestic security of France, said the source. A man opened fire in the centre of Paris. According to preliminary data, his name is Karim Chorfi, he was 39 years old, immediately after the incident, investigators came with a search warrant in his apartment.

This man was a French citizen who shot two officers in 2001, after they were stopped by a police car, the source said. He was taken into custody, but during questioning he snatched another officer and fired three shots at him, said the source. He was convicted of this offense and had a criminal record for violent robbery, the source said.

According to the source, French investigators now believe that it was, in all probability, a terrorist act. They believe that there was only one attacker, and the threat is gone, the source said.
