Taiwan might legalize same-sex marriage Taiwan will become the first place in Asia, where same-sex couples be allowed to marry. The jury gave the island's Parliament, known as the Legislative yuan, 2 years to change or make new laws that could potentially make Taiwan the first place in Asia to allow same-sex marriages.

On the island annually hosts a gay pride parade - the biggest in Asia, but the issue of equality in marriage is not divided Taiwanese society, and in recent months, thousands of people opposed to equality in marriage. "This decision is a step forward in the history of same-sex marriage in Taiwan," said Taiwan legislator Yu the Main.

Yu said that even if lawmakers do not take the law to allow same-sex marriage within the next 2 years, gay couples will still be able to register the marriage by 2019. The bill is already making its way through the Parliament of Taiwan, but it has stalled.

"We believe that it is a huge success for the LGBT movement and the movement for equality in marriage in Taiwan," said Wayne Lin, an activist who pursues a LGBT hotline on the island. "We want to make amendments to the Civil code, to same-sex couples can register the marriage ... our goal is to complete this whole process within this year."

Tsai ing-Wen, the first female President of Taiwan, spoke in support of gay marriage before the election in 2016. "The face of love everyone is equal", she said in the video in Facebook during the gay pride parade in 2015.
