Lopez, who was released from military prison, under house arrest in July, was taken from his home shortly after midnight, his wife said on social networks. Lopez took on the car with the words "SEBIN", an abbreviation for Venezuelan intelligence.

The Ledesma, former mayor of Caracas and a prominent opposition figure, also taken from his home SEBIN, according to tweets from his wife and children. He is one of the leaders of the opposition, which in recent years was arrested and jailed by the socialist government.

The arrest of Lopez, which began in early 2014 in connection with charges of inciting anti-government protests, has become a rallying cry for protesters against the regime. He is under house arrest since the beginning of July.

Lopez has long been a vocal opponent of the socialists in power and was ousted in 2008 from office due to allegations of corruption. He described the suspension as political retribution. The international court of human rights cleared his name in 2011, but the Supreme court of Venezuela has upheld the ban on powers.

The removal of two men from their homes occurred after the controversial elections on Sunday, creating a new legislative body, consisting solely of supporters of President Nicolas Maduro.
