Trump calls on North Korea to negotiate President Donald trump has already indicated that he is willing to meet face-to-face with North Korean leader Kim Jong-UN - the proposal has drawn sharp criticism from lawmakers.

But recent steps in the effort by Pyongyang to develop nuclear weapons, able to strike at the US, has suggested that the idea of participation in direct diplomacy with the Kim regime - or even facilitating a direct meeting between trump and the leader of North Korea - might not be so crazy.

Currently, trump is a critical juncture when it comes to defining an effective diplomatic policy towards North Korea. After months of tension caused by harsh rhetoric, North Korea launched 2 tests of Intercontinental ballistic missiles in July, what indicates that its missile program may be more developed than previously thought, despite years of sanctions imposed by the international community.

The US and its allies in the region the overwhelming condemnation of both tests, and the White house has repeatedly told reporters that he is considering "all options" after the last run, which happened just last week.

The policy of the administration to trump North Korea to date has been to increase pressure on Pyongyang with sanctions, to push them to the negotiating table. Some U.S. lawmakers have publicly supported the idea of participation in diplomacy with North Korea, and some of them expressed readiness to have direct talks with Pyongyang.
