Relations between Russia and the West deteriorated in connection with the situation in Ukraine. In response, Russia has restricted the import of food items from countries that have introduced in relation to penalties: USA, EU, Canada, Australia and Norway. A ban were beef, pork, poultry, sausages, fish, vegetables, fruits, dairy products and some other products.

"Entered punishment and retaliation from Russia affected the economy of Cyprus. It was because of our relations with Russia and a high degree of financial and economic dependence of Cyprus not only from the service sector, tourism and investment, but also in the field of defense, " said Christodoulidis.

The official authorized by the government of Cyprus said that Nicosia still holds the position that " punishment against Russia ineffective as a way to cope with the crisis in Ukraine ".
