In Germany, a nurse who is currently serving a life sentence in prison for the murder of 6 patients might have killed 84 people, making it one of the worst in the history of serial killers, said police and prosecutors in the country on Monday.
40-year-old Niels Hagel was imprisoned in 2015 after he was convicted for the murder of six people. Authorities subsequently investigated hundreds of deaths, including the exhumation of the bodies of former patients in clinics which Hegel means worked in Delmenhorst and Oldenburg in Northwest Germany.
The police said that they believe that Hegel means killed 36 patients in Oldenburg in the period 1999-2001 and another 48 people from the hospital in Delmenhorst. The police said that the death toll could be even higher, but a final number cannot be known because of the cremation of some possible victims.
In past hearings, Hagel admitted that he administered the patient a drug that could cause heart failure.
The chief of police of Oldenburg Johann Kwame told reporters at a press conference on Monday that the number of victims left power "silent".
"Murder could be prevented if the people in charge at the time - and I emphasize at that time, especially in the Oldenburg clinic and later in Delmenhorst, did not hesitate to alert the authorities," he said.
