The European Commission will not be able to stop the construction of the pipeline " Nord stream - 2 ", despite the adoption of the new EU Gas Directive. About it as informs the print edition Handelsblatt said on Wednesday German Chancellor Angela Merkel.
"The project is in practice fully approved. The new Gas Directive gives the European Commission more opportunities to challenge (the implementation of the " Nord stream - 2.- approx. Ed.). However, she (Directive.- approx. Ed.) does not jeopardize the project, " - said Merkel.
"The key moment" in the construction "Nord stream - 2" the Chancellor called Ukraine. In her vision, Kiev is obliged to be a gas transit country, despite the emergence of a new pipeline.
The project "Northern stream - 2" involves the laying of 2 pipelines with a total capacity of 55 billion cubic meters of gas per year from the coast of Russia through the Baltic sea to Germany. It will be built very close with the existing " Northern stream ". The launch of the new pipeline is expected at the end of this year.
The EU in April was released amendments to the Gas Directive, relevant to the work of offshore pipelines and, therefore, will spread to the " Nord stream - 2 ". The updated law will take effect may 23.
