A blockbuster set at the outbreak of the tragic events in South Ossetia, during which Georgia launched a military offensive against the republic in August 2008, will be released in Russia next year.
ґDirected by the creator of The Turkish Gambit, Dzhanik Faiziev, the drama with a budget of $16 million boasts 3-D effects and state-of-the-art computer technology.
It took 95 days to shoot the action drama August 8 - named after the day the hostilities broke out.
It revolves around a young Russian woman, Ksenia, who after splitting with her husband, tries to organize her private life in Moscow from scratch. So she sends her seven-year-old son to his father, who is based in South Ossetian capital, Tskhinval. When the war breaks out, she rushes there to rescue her son.
The film is awash with battle scenes, special effects and risky stunts, which were filmed in Abkhazia and North Ossetia.
Over 30 units of real military weaponry - helicopters, tanks and armored personnel carriers - were used in the film; up to 3,000 local citizens and military personnel took part in large-scale crowd scenes.
The Georgian attack in 2008 lasted five days and resulted in numerous casualties. Shortly after the fighting ended, despite international criticism, Moscow recognized the independence of South Ossetia and Abkhazia.
It is not the first war drama on the dramatic events in South Ossetia.
A film adaptation of the conflict in the Caucasus, Olympius Inferno, was released in 2009. It focused on a young scientist searching for a unique butterfly he hopes to film. Instead, he ends up shooting pictures of a very different kind - the first scenes of Georgia`s military action against South Ossetia.
The Georgian "blitzkrieg" also drew the attention of Hollywood. Finnish director of Die Hard 2, Renny Harlin, has created his vision of the conflict entitled 5 Days of War, starring Andy Garcia playing Georgian President Mikhail Saakashvili.
