Samara citizens may commemorate 650th anniversary of the city in 2007. For more accurate definition of Samara foundation date a working group has been established on the order of Governor Titov.
The deputy of regional Duma the historian Mikhail Matveev has initiated the campaign. He suggested to consider the year of 1357 the foundation date of the city, when Moscow metropolitan Aleksiy I visited would-be Samara on his way to Golden Horde. He foretold a town foundation at the place, where a hermit had received him.
The first annalistic mentioning of Samara refers to the year of 1361, when at the place of the ancient settlement Samar, also known to Italian cartographers of the XIV century, prince Grigory Zasekin planned to built a fortress, but later constructed it a little higher.
The official date of foundation is considered the year of 1586, when Ivan the Terrible sent to Samara tract working people, who founded the fortress on the way to Astrakhan.
In May 2006 Samara is to celebrate 420th anniversary of the city.
If Governor and the working group`s initiation is accepted, Samara citizens will be able to commemorate much more distinguished date - 650th anniversary of the city. Which implies federal support of the Anniversary.
