First Russian polar station "Mirny" in Antarctica commemorates its 50th anniversary on February 13, Monday.
The Research Institute of Arctic and Antarctica has informed that official hoisting the USSR flag took place on February 13, 1965, and the first weather-report was sent from Mirny.
The station was called after the name of the legendary Russian sloop "Mirny", the crew of which was first to see polar continent in January, 1820.
This date is considered the beginning of regular Russian and Soviet research in Antarctic.
During 50 years 17 327 members of Antarctic expeditions have worked on the sixth continents. Of ships, aircrafts and carriers have accomplished hundreds of voyages and flights to Antarctic coast.
At the present time there are five Russian stations are operating in Antarctic, these are Mirny, Vostok, Novolazarevskaya, Progress and Bellinsgausen, and two season field bases - Druzhnaya-4 and Molodezhnaya.
