Press office of the Russian Embassy to Moldova released a statement today "in connection with recent reports in Latvian media about possible terms of ratification of the Russia-Latvia border treaty by the Russian State Duma," reports a REGNUM correspondent. In particular, Diena newspaper (Riga) noted on July 7 that contrary to what was previously promised, the Russian State Duma would not ratify the border treaty in July, but will postpone the issue till fall. The statement issued by the Russian embassy says that "now, active work is being continued on the treaty. The State Duma regulation that sets the procedure of ratification of intergovernmental treaties is more complicated than the one in Latvia and, thus, it takes more time. Besides, the delay is stipulated by the busy schedule of Russian President Vladimir Putin, who was on visits abroad, including the United States and Guatemala, for a long time. Meanwhile, the Russian president submitted the border treaty for ratification to the Russian State Duma. Now, the treaty is under consideration of the Russian State Duma Foreign Affairs Committee. As a session of the committee planned for July 13, the voting will take place on this priority international document. After that the treaty will be submitted for a plenary session of the Russian State Duma on September 3. We would like to note once again it is in the Russian side▓s interest that the treaty is ratified as soon as possible."
