Russia`s Federal Security Services (FSB) has seized a stash of hashish worth 280 million rubles ($8 million) in the southern republic of Dagestan, an FSB spokesman said on Thursday.
The hashish was found in a garage in the town of Derbent, stored in 72 plastic wrap packages, weighing a total of 300 kilograms (661 lbs), according to the spokesman.
"According to our information, the narcotics were trafficked in from Iran and were to be sold in St. Petersburg," he said.
An investigation is continuing to identify all of those involved in trafficking the drugs.
Most of the heroin and hashish coming into Russia originates in Afghanistan and is then trafficked through the former Soviet republics of Tajikistan and Uzbekistan. Most of the drugs are then sold in Russia`s largest cities, or shipped on to Europe.
