One policeman and one robber died in armed attacks in Moscow overnight, and a senior Defense Ministry official was robbed.
In the first case, two police officers arrived at an apartment on Uralskaya Street in east Moscow on Thursday evening after being alerted by phone of a robbery attempt. As the robbers fled the scene, one fired shots at the officers, killing one.
The second officer caught one of the robbers, and the other criminal, who escaped, was later arrested. During the attack, a woman and her son in the apartment were injured and later hospitalized.
In the second incident, which took place less than an hour later, two attackers entered a supermarket on Batyuninskaya Street in southeast Moscow and fired several shots into the air. Around 10 people were in the building at the time. Investigators said the assailants were former security guards at the store.
Police arrived shortly after store staff managed to press the alarm button, and blocked the entrance. The attackers took one staff member hostage and tried to escape, opening fire at police.
One of the robbers was killed in the return fire, and the second was arrested. No customers or staff were injured, a police report said.
The Komsomolskaya Pravda daily said a customer tried to leave the shop, and was injured in the back.
In a separate incident early on Friday, unknown men attacked a general of the Russian Defense Ministry in western Moscow, making off with his briefcase containing secret documents. The attackers beat the man and fled the scene.
