At least 11 people were killed in a multiple-car crash in Russia`s North Caucasus republic of Dagestan, local police said on Tuesday. The accident involving three Zhiguli sedans occurred late on Monday on a highway between Kalinin and Terekli-Mekteb in the Nogay district of Dagestan. "The current death toll is 11 people, including two children. Nine died at the scene and two died at a hospital," police said. According to a preliminary investigation, one of the cars veered into incoming traffic and hit another Zhiguli car. The third car hit the wreckage seconds later. The network of Russian highways is one of the world`s longest, but only 20% of regional roads meet international safety standards. At least 3,000 people are killed in highway accidents each summer, when the country`s mostly two-lane roads suffer from heavy congestion caused by summer vacationers on the way to holiday homes or Black Sea resorts, and by trucks transporting southern fruit to central and northern population centers.
