Russia`s footballers did nothing unprofessional before their World Cup qualification playoff against Slovenia, trainer Guus Hiddink said in a newspaper interview published on Monday. Russian media have been rife with allegations that team members were out partying until the early hours before the first game in Moscow, which Russia won 2-1 after conceding a late goal that ultimately proved decisive. Hiddink told Sport Express that the team had looked in great physical shape during the match, adding that if anyone had been out all night he would have been struggling 10 minutes after kick off. The Dutch trainer added that if he was shown concrete proof that a player had been in a restaurant until 5 a.m. he would never select the guilty party again. Slovenia won the second leg 1-0 in Maribor, advancing to the finals in South Africa next summer on away goals. They were drawn in a group with England, the United States and Algeria. Russian captain Andrei Arshavin has been singled out for criticism over his performance, which was below his usual standards, but Hiddink could not identify a reason for the Arsenal star`s sub-par display. The coach praised Arshavin as one of Russia`s few world-class footballers and said the country should be proud of those players who were advertisements for the Russian game abroad. Russia`s English Premier League quartet - Arshavin, Tottenham Hotspur`s Roman Pavlyuchnko, Chelsea`s Yury Zhirkov and Everton`s Diniyar Bilyaletdinov - started both games, but Stuttgart`s Pavel Pogrebnyak had to settle for a late cameo as his side fought in vain to turn the tie around in Slovenia. Hiddink also dismissed suggestions that he would become Turkey`s coach, and although he did not say whether he would sign the two-year contract extension now on the table, he does expect to be at the Euro 2012 qualifying draw on February 7, four days after the Russian Football Union elects a new president.
