The British singer is a huge soccer fan and was keen to lend his vocals to a new version of 3 Lions after discovering Lightning Seeds frontman Ian Broudie was planning to re-release the track. Robbie saw Ian at a London recording studio recently and asked him if he could be involved in the project.
The new version will feature comedians David Baddiel and Frank Skinner - who appeared on the original single - and will be released in time for the World Cup in June.
"Robbie bumped into Ian and they decided to team up," a source told British newspaper The Sun. "They were really pleased with the results. His management didn`t even know he had taken part until afterwards and some of them are saying he should focus on his own music rather than resurrecting a track that`s 14 years old."
The original 3 Lions single was released in 1996 as the England team`s official anthem when they hosted the European Championships. It was subsequently released again in 1998 with updated lyrics.
A spokesman for Robbie confirmed the singer`s involvement, revealing the 34-year-old star was thrilled to appear on the latest version of the track.
"Robbie has contributed to the 3 Lions track and, together with his involvement in the Soccer Aid celebrity soccer match in June, is happy to be involved," they said.
