The 65-year-old actor was present in court when Manhattan Federal Judge Richard Berman read out Cameron`s sentence. The 31-year-old pleaded guilty to conspiring to sell methamphetamine and cocaine and heroin possession, charges which carry a maximum ten years in prison. Michael, his wife Catherine Zeta-Jones and his father Kirk Douglas had written to the judge to beg for leniency, asking him to send Cameron to rehab instead of prison. In his sentencing ruling, Berman blasted Michael and the other letter-writers for making Cameron into a "victim", when he was actually a criminal. "Get beyond and get over that idea ... that Cameron Douglas is a victim," Berman said. "This is Cameron`s last chance to make it." In addition to jail time, Cameron was ordered to pay a $25,000 fine and sentenced to 450 hours of community service. He will also be required to spend an additional five years in a supervised release program when his five-year jail sentence is complete. After the sentencing, Cameron released a brief statement pledging to kick his long-running heroin addiction for good. He also apologised to his family for what he had put them through. "I will not be led astray by my warped thinking and false pretences due to my heroin addiction," the statement read. "I want to take the right path ... I feel like it`s my duty. I apologize to my family and my loved ones for putting them through this nightmare of my making." Cameron was arrested last year for dealing the drugs in New York, and was caught again when his girlfriend tried to smuggle him drugs in an electric toothbrush while he was under home detention awaiting trial. He was not released on bail for fear he would relapse. The eight months he has already spent in prison will be included in his five-year sentence. Michael was heard telling Cameron`s lawyers he thought the sentence was "fair", but refused to speak to reporters outside the court.
