Russia instructed its embassy in Thailand on Wednesday to clarify the nature of child sex abuse charges against acclaimed pianist Mikhail Pletnev.

"The Russian Culture Ministry together with Russian Foreign Ministry have forwarded an urgent order to the Russian embassy in Thailand to make all necessary efforts to clarify the situation and to offer maximum consulate protection to the distinguished musician," a statement published on the Russian Cultural Ministry`s website said.
Earlier in the day, world media said Pletnev had been charged with raping a 14-year-old boy in Thailand, and had been released on $ 9,000 bail.
If convicted, Pletnev may face up to 20 years imprisonment.
Thai media reported on Tuesday that Grammy laureate Pletnev, 53, was arrested on child molestation charges at the Euro Club and Restaurant, which he co-owns in Pattaya. He was taken back to his house at Areeya Villas near Soi Siam Country Club, where police found CDs containing pornographic films and images.
