The 2001 movie - which starred Tom Cruise and his ex-girlfriend Penelope Cruz and Cameron Diaz - topped a poll run by DVD subscription firm LoveFilm as fans found the plotline difficult to understand. The film - which was directed by Cameron Crowe - told a surreal tale of a wealthy publishing heir, played by Cruise, who, after a car accident leaves him horribly disfigured, begins to suffer from a series of strange hallucinations. David Lynch`s `Mulholland Drive` came in second place while `Donnie Darko`, which was directed by Richard Kelly, was third. Other films in the top 10 included `The Matrix Revolutions`, `Memento`, `Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind` and `A Clockwork Orange`. Helen Cowley, of LoveFilm rental, said: "It`s clear dreaming is the biggest cause of confusion for viewers. "Switching from reality to dream sequences pulls the wool over our eyes."
