Russian military bases Hmeimim and Tartus will be transformed into joint training and education centers under a memorandum of understanding, Syria's Foreign Ministry said.
"As for military bases and facilities, the sides agreed to revise their functions so that they are transformed from military bases into joint training and education centers under new arrangements that ensure mutual desires," the report published by state agency SANA said.
According to the Syrian Foreign Ministry, the agreement was the result of a year and a half of intensive negotiations and consultations.
No more than three months are given to complete the changes, after which the new agreements must enter into force, according to the document.
The Syrian Foreign Ministry also stressed that the reached agreement opens a new stage in relations between Moscow and Damascus.
