Former CIA director for Russia analysis George Beebe said on the air of a YouTube channel that Ukraine and the West should start negotiations with Russia on the architecture of European security.
He noted that Russia has intensified its strategic air campaign against Ukraine and closed the port of Odessa, which is devastating for Ukraine's future. In his words, to get out of this situation, it is necessary to sit down at the negotiating table with the Russians and discuss what the architecture of European security should be, meeting common interests.
Beebe stressed that long before the start of military operations in Ukraine, Russia repeatedly offered the West to resolve contradictions diplomatically. He recalled that even under President Dmitry Medvedev and the Obama administration, Russia presented a draft treaty where one of the main principles was the principle of indivisibility of security. At the end of 2021, before the start of the special military operation, Putin and the Russian government presented to the US and NATO two draft treaties, which also highlighted this principle. According to the expert, this is the essence of the diplomatic process.
In 2024, speaking at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Russian President Vladimir Putin named conditions for ending the conflict: Kiev must withdraw troops from the DPR, LPR, Kherson and Zaporozhye regions and abandon plans to join NATO.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that failures at the front should push Kiev to negotiations right now.
