US President Donald Trump has spoken out against any payments to Iran as compensation for damage caused by US military operations.
He noted that if Tehran claims compensation, then Washington has no less reason to demand compensation for the damage caused over the past 50 years.
Earlier the same day, the American leader said that the topic of compensation to Iran was not discussed at all at meetings of representatives of the two countries. Now he intends to raise the issue of payments from the Islamic republic at all future negotiations. In addition, Trump promised to seek compensation for the families of those killed during protests in Iran.
In mid-June, Washington and Tehran signed a memorandum that envisaged the start of the process of concluding a peace agreement. However, three weeks later, tensions rose again: the United States accused Iran of shelling commercial ships in the Strait of Hormuz, after which the parties resumed mutual strikes.
In early August, Donald Trump announced the cancellation of another wave of attacks on Iran due to a possible deal. He promised that the strait would soon be opened, and threatened to resume strikes if this did not happen.
