US President Donald Trump said that US citizen Robert Gilman, who was serving a sentence in Russia, is heading to his homeland. According to Trump, the plane with Gilman will land at Andrews Air Force Base in Washington this evening local time. The White House chief also noted that he has already spoken with the released man, and he asked him for a cheeseburger.
Earlier, a representative of the American's family, Eric Lebson, claimed that since the end of June Gilman has been in a catatonic state.
Recall that in January 2022, Gilman, while intoxicated, caused a disturbance in a train car traveling on the Sukhum - Moscow route. After being detained, he kicked a police officer several times. In the same year, a court sentenced him to 4.5 years in a general-regime colony, but later the term was reduced to 3.5 years.
While serving his sentence, Gilman repeatedly used force against correctional colony staff and an investigator. In this regard, a new criminal case was opened against him, and he was transferred to a pre-trial detention center, where in November 2023 he struck a FSIN inspector.
As a result, by the totality of sentences, the court sentenced the American to ten years and one month of imprisonment.
