The Iranian government has received an official proposal to become a participant in the Mecca Agreement, which provides for joint defense between Saudi Arabia, Turkey and Pakistan. This information was announced by the head of the Iranian parliament's news agency, Mehdi Rahimi.
The treaty was signed on August 7. Its provisions are aimed at strengthening collective deterrence, with an armed attack on one participant being regarded as an attack on all three. In addition, the document opens up opportunities for expanding military interaction, coordination of actions and implementation of joint projects in the defense industry.
Turkish leader Recep Tayyip Erdogan emphasized after the signing that the agreement is not directed against any states and remains open for other countries in the region interested in peace, stability and prosperity to join.
